Dental Implants Q & A

Why are dental implants important?

A dental implant closely mimics your natural tooth by using a titanium root to serve as the anchor for your new false tooth. Replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant is important to:

  • Prevent bone and gum tissue loss
  • Prevent teeth shifting and a crooked smile
  • Help you maintain your normal chewing and speaking abilities

You may even need a dental implant to stabilize a partial or full set of dentures, so you won’t have to worry about dentures slipping another day.

What is the process of getting a dental implant?

Getting a dental implant begins with oral surgery, but Arizona Advanced Dental offers plenty of sedation options, so you can relax and even fall asleep during your procedure. During your implant surgery, Dr. Clifford or Dr. Cutler makes an opening in your gums and surgically attaches the titanium root to your jawbone.

If you have inadequate gum or bone tissue, they may need to perform a grafting procedure to help stabilize your implant. Over the next few months, the titanium implant begins fusing with your bone, and gum tissue starts building up around it, a process known as osseointegration.

Arizona Advanced Dental offers on-site 3D scanning and CT imaging technology to better track your healing process for optimal results. (Imaging is also used to determine if you have enough bone and gum tissue to support an implant.) Once your dental implant is stable, Dr. Clifford or Dr. Cutler can get you ready for a crown.

After gathering molds and helping you select a perfect shade of white for your crown — it should blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth — the team sends your details off to the dental lab for crown fabrication.

Within a few weeks, your crown arrives back in the clinic and you’re scheduled for a follow-up visit to have it bonded in place. Depending on how quickly you heal, from beginning to end, getting a dental implant can take at least 4-6 months.

How long does a dental implant last?

Dental implant materials, including a titanium root and porcelain crown, don’t decay. But surrounding teeth can decay and you can still lose gum tissue due to abscess of a neighboring tooth or gum disease. For these reasons, routine checkups and cleanings at Arizona Advanced Dental are essential.

As long as you brush and floss daily, and stick to your twice-a-year visits at Arizona Advanced Dental, your dental implant can last a lifetime.
