Is Smoking Giving You Bad Breath?

Cigarettes

Do you have a bad breath? Do you smoke? If so, then it could be your smoking habit that causes your bad breath.

People who smoke normally obtain what is commonly known as smoker’s breath, which is a stale scent that is created by the cigarette smoke that is still lingering in your throat and lungs. Smoking also leaves chemical compounds in your mouth that can mix with your saliva and cause bad breath.

The mouth can become dried out due to smoking, which also decreases your saliva production. This gives the compounds from the cigarette and other bacteria in the mouth the opportunity to thrive without any saliva available to control their activities.

Dental hygiene tools such as toothbrushes and floss.

Not all bacteria in our mouths are bad. In fact, bacteria is necessary for the initial stages of digesting the foods we consume. But sometimes the reaction of these bacteria and certain proteins we consume will result in odorous compounds being present in our mouths, and these compounds cause bad breath.

It is not always possible to prevent the bacteria/protein mix from creating odors. However,  a regular brushing schedule (twice a day) using a dentist recommended toothpaste and flossing daily are the first steps to eliminate bad breath. Other ways to prevent bad breath is through drinking water, which increases the production of saliva and lows the risk of bacteria thriving in a dry mouth. For instant freshness, chew gum which contains xylitol. Avoiding foods, such as garlic, onions and other spices is another way to prevent bad breath. However, one of the most effective ways to decrease your chances of developing bad breath would be to quit smoking.
